THE HISTORY OF BRACES

Braces are a feature of every orthodontic practice. They’ve become a part of the modern dental care landscape. But where did braces originate? You may be forgiven for thinking that braces are a creation of the 20th century technological revolution.

However, did you know that the pursuit of a straighter smile dates back as far as the Ancient Egyptians? Braces have a unique and fascinating history and in today’s blog we’re going to take a look at the interesting journey that braces have been on for millennia!

Ancient Egypt

Archaeologists have unearthed mummies dating as far back as 1600BC with animal intestines wrapped around the teeth in a similar manner to orthodontic chord used today. So a straight smile was important to people even as far back as Ancient Egypt. Thank goodness for technological advancements though, we don’t fancy working with animal intestines any time soon!

Ancient Rome

Leaving animal intestines behind, the Romans attempted to straighten teeth and close gaps by using gold wire bound around the teeth, discovered in a Roman tomb. Roman philosopher and doctor Aulus Cornelius Celsus wrote about the treatment of misaligned teeth using finger pressure.

The 18th Century – the birth of modern orthodontics

The first modern brace in the tradition sense was invented by French dentist Pierre Fauchard. He created a device called a ‘Bandeau’ which used a horseshoe shaped piece of iron with silk to hold it in place. This was thought to help promote jaw growth and improve alignment.

1900s – coining the term

The term ‘braces’ first appeared in the early 1900s and the material used shifted to gold, however it wasn’t uncommon for dentists to use ivory or wood to create rudimentary braces. American dentist Edward Angle developed a classification system that is still used today to describe the degree to which teeth are misaligned and how the teeth fit together. His contribution simplified the system of orthodontics and is considered the father of orthodontics in the most modern sense.

The Invisalign revolution

1997 saw the creation of one of the biggest innovations in orthodontistry with the creation of the Invisalign system. Founded by Zia Christi while an adult braces wearer, he conceived of a series of clear aligners that made improvements on traditional medical braces that also provided adults a discreet alternative to clunky metal braces often associated with adolescence.
