Anyone who reads our blog on a regular basis will know that we are firm believers in the power of modern dental implants. When it comes to restoring lost teeth, there is no more effective solution. However, implant therapy is not for everyone. Before you make the decision to invest in implants your dentist will have to evaluate if you are eligible.
Let’s take a look at some of the most common factors affecting dental implant eligibility among patients.
How healthy is your jawbone?
A large part of the dental implant procedure involves an implant being screwed into your jawbone. This provides a firm anchor for a new, artificial tooth. For this to be successful there must be enough jawbone available for the implant to sit firmly.
Adults that have experienced bone loss or a reduction in bone density in the jaw are often rendered ineligible for implants as there is simply not enough jawbone available to allow the implant to securely graft. This is also why younger patients are not frequently eligible for implants, as their jawbones are still growing and developing.
How healthy are your teeth and gums?
Ideally, dental implant candidates will have no underlying dental health issues. If you do suffer from cavities or tooth decay candidates then it’s likely that these will have to be treated prior to implant treatment starting.
Teeth clenching and grinding can also be another indication that you’re not eligible for implants, as it will likely cause damage to any new replacement teeth that are fitted as part of the implant process.
What is your lifestyle like?
You lifestyle has a huge effect on the health of your teeth and, by extension, how well you respond to implant treatment. Smokers are not the greatest candidates for implant therapy, especially since smoking post-surgery increases the risk of complications and infections. Taking certain medications can also rule out clients for dental implants, which is why it’s always best to discuss your circumstances in full with your dentist before embarking on any treatment plan.
At Ollie & Darsh we ensure that we begin any new client relationship with a free, confidential consultation. That way you can discuss any concerns with a friendly face in our Liverpool city centre over a cup of fresh coffee. This allows us to make sure you’re getting the best possible treatment for your smile and your lifestyle.
