The idea of wearing braces as an adult used to be almost completely unheard of. If you didn’t have orthodontic treatment as a child, you’d missed the boat. Inevitably, this means that many people missed out on the benefits of wearing braces altogether.
Fast-forward to the current day and the same level of stigma no longer applies – thanks in large part to the quality and affordability of clear braces for adults. If you’re interested in having healthier teeth and a straighter, more attractive smile, read on to find out more.
Why consider braces as an adult?
The most obvious – and common – reason to get braces as an adult is to give yourself straighter teeth. In a 2016 study, Invisalign and Harris Poll revealed that nine in ten US adults who had undergone teeth-straightening felt that having straight teeth was important to their confidence. What’s more, 29% said having their teeth straightened helped them to achieve a personal goal. In short, there’s little doubt that adult orthodontic treatment can have a big impact on self-confidence.
However, it’s wrong to assume that adult braces offer purely aesthetic benefits. They can also have a significant impact on your overall oral health. For instance:
It reduces your chances of suffering TMJ
A chronic condition caused by misalignment of the teeth, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) can cause severe headaches and a sore jaw. Correcting the alignment of your teeth – and therefore countering issues caused by underbites and overbites – can help you avoid suffering with TMJ in later life.

It could improve your oral healthcare regime
It can be harder to clean crooked teeth, as there are likely to be more hard-to-reach spots in your mouth. This can result in greater build-up of bacteria and plaque, and therefore increase the risk of gum disease and tooth decay/loss. Straightening your teeth inevitably makes it easier to brush and floss effectively.
It could save you money in the long run
While it might sound counterintuitive, paying for adult braces could actually save you money. Given the associated oral health benefits detailed above, braces could reduce your chances of having to pay for fillings, gum disease treatments and tooth extractions.
The benefits of clear braces for adults
Now you’re clear on the benefits of adult orthodontic care. But why choose clear braces for adults?
Perhaps the better question is “why not”? Clear braces are now an affordable option for many patients, while advances in technology mean they are now just as effective as traditional orthodontic treatments. This means it’s possible to achieve your dream smile and improve the function of your teeth without having to cope with the aesthetic implications of having a “metal mouth”.
Clear braces: What are the options and how do they work?
At Ollie & Darsh, we’re proud to offer clear orthodontic treatments from Invisalign and Six Month Smiles. Whether you prefer removable aligners or fast-acting clear braces for adults, we can find the perfect solution to fit your needs.
The Invisalign plan involves wearing a succession of clear, comfortable aligners. After two weeks wearing one set of aligners, you’ll move on to your next set, which means your teeth will gradually be moved into the desired position with minimal discomfort. Throughout the treatment, you’ll visit us regularly – generally every couple of months – so that we can check on your progress and fit you for your next aligners.
We’re one of Europe’s top 50 Invisalign providers, so you can be sure that if you come to us for your orthodontic treatment, you’ll be in excellent hands.
Six Month Smiles
Whereas Invisalign is based on a system of clear aligners, Six Month Smiles involves wearing discreet braces made from white wires and clear brackets. Through a combination of innovative techniques and materials, the Six Month Smiles system corrects crooked, misaligned or poorly spaced teeth in an average of just six months.
Once your clear braces have been fitted, three to seven adjustments will be made over the course of your treatment. You should start to notice changes to your smile after just a month. What’s more, the cost is often lower than with traditional braces (although this will ultimately depend on your treatment goals).
